Mobile devices have emerged as our daily companion whose applicability evolves as the day unfolds. One of such applications is in the area of learning, called mobile learning (M-learning). However, as with all new technologies, M-learning is faced with the issues of standard, content packing, and deployment. And like other distributed applications on ubiquitous networks, M-learning is challenged with performance issues. This work shows the implementation and evaluation of a model for intelligent mobile learning system (IMLS) using a multi-agent system (MAS), such as the Java Agent Development Environment (JADE) framework. Two M-learning applications (agent-based and non-agent) were developed, deployed and tested. The agent-based application is deployed using an HTTP-based Message Transfer Protocol (MTP). The results suggest that agents can increase the performance of an M-learning application up to eight times.

Computer programming is considered a fundamental subject in most of engineering and computer related programs in many universities. Usually, the teaching responsibility is given to a single department, which will serve the entire university. The limitation on staffing most of the time, results in the creation of bigsized classes. This in turn, will produce voluminous workload to the teaching staff, hence, rendering close monitoring of students’ performance next to impossible. Relief might be possible by venturing into the realm of a Computer-Assisted Assessment (CAA). This paper describes our experience in designing and implementing a CAA System that is based on distributed and agent-oriented architectures. The system design caters for two primary objectives; to harness the power of distributed computing and to enable the integration of CAA into existing E-Learning System. We have analyzed and extracted important functionalities required for the system and describe agent’s roles for.

E-learning refers to learning that is delivered or enabled via electronic technology. It is the effective learning process created by combining digitally delivered content with support and services. E -learning is classified as synchronous or asynchronous. Agent -based E-learning system retrieves relevant learning materials, process and analyzes data to enable meaningful E -learning recommendations to instructors and learners. E -learning intelligent agents are sets of independent software tools that are linked with other applications and database software running within a computer environment. Personalized agent-based E-learning system provide a set of personalization functionalities such as personalizing learning plans, learning materials, test and necessary instant messages etc., to online learners. In recent years, numerous efforts have been made in the direction of automating the content acquisition and distribution, but personalized content delivery, access and interaction rem.

This paper introduces an architectural framework of an agent based Expert System for Online Assessment (EESOA) in distributed environment for the learners of ODL (Open and Distance Learning) System. This framework is an extension of ESOA (Expert System for Online Assessment). The proposed system is designed using JESS (Java Expert System Shell) and JADE (Java Agent Development Framework) with JIPMS (Java Inter-Platform Mobile Services) support. The proposed system can be deployed in J2EE (Java 2 Enterprise Edition) environment using MVC (Model View Controller) paradigm. The system is integrated with various databases, as question bank, residing in various known servers (i.e. distributed homogeneous environment), where JADE is there with JIPMS support in each and every servers. The student academic/performance records are stored in database, residing in the same server where the proposed system resides. The rule base is in the form of XML files, reside in the same server where the proposed system resides. In this system a mobile agent is used to retrieve question set for students from the known distributed environment by moving one server to another.
